I’m not a lawyer, but I got my name from Atticus Finch. He was the lawyer in “To Kill A Mockingbird” and a pretty cool guy. I live with a couple of lawyers myself. I think they are pretty cool too. I don’t know what they do when they go to the office, but when they come home, they treat me like a prince. Sometimes they talk about things I don’t understand, but then they give me a treat, and that makes it all better.
I like to dig holes. But that’s not always good. Living with lawyers has taught me, if you are in a hole, stop digging. Sometimes their clients dig holes and need David or Stephanie to rescue them. They are good at getting people out of holes, but I don’t need that. I can get out of the hole and cover it up! Unfortunately, David and Stephanie’s clients don’t find that to be so easy.
David and Stephanie like to teach me tricks. They say, “Speak” and I am supposed to make noise with my mouth, which I do. Then, I get a treat. Actually, I knew how to do this all the time, but I let them think they taught it to me. But, if I did not hear them, I would not know what to do. I have learned that sometimes it is more important to listen than to speak. I listen, then speak and then get a treat. Life is good.
I have noticed that humans sometimes get really upset about things that don’t matter much and often forget about the things that do matter. I try to remind my humans, but I have to be patient. When my humans are away it makes me sad. When they come home I am happy. I show them that I am happy to see them. It doesn’t matter if they are gone for ten days or ten minutes, I am happy that they came back. Humans ought to be better at saying how happy they are to have each other in their lives. My humans always tell me I’m special. They let me know they are lucky to have me.
Since my humans’ “real” children went away to college, I have a full time job. Stephanie and David decided I needed to help with their law firm as well. So I agreed to help with some of their blog writing and to allow them to use my face on their website. I can also dig any holes they need. I think I’ll keep my humans.
